Vacancy Details

A rare opportunity has arisen for a talented and experienced Head Gardener on one of Britain’s most majestic and historic country estates. The extensive gardens and grounds, landscaped by Capability Brown, cover 45 acres including historic parkland occupied by a herd of fallow deer and a 26 acre man-made lake. The site is a popular visitor attraction of considerable historical significance, with gardens and grounds that exhibit a standard of horticultural excellence.

The newly-appointed Head Gardener will be responsible for the restoration, conservation, on-going development and overall management of the gardens. Daily tasks will vary, but will typically include the planning and monitoring of plant care programs including design, landscaping and propagation, conducting risk and COSHH assessments and the management of an on-going machinery maintenance program. You will formulate the annual garden budget and manage the allocation of funding, have an understanding of water treatment and be prepared to manage a water feature garden. Applicants must be experienced in the management of staff, and be able to interact effectively with the public and visitor groups. You will also be expected to liaise with, and organise routine work directly with contractors on site.

Applicants must hold an academic horticulture qualification at Level 3 or above, spray certificates (PA1/PA6), a full clean UK driving licence and a minimum of 5 years’ full-time practical experience in a historic garden or recognised horticultural establishment. A chainsaw certificate (CS30/31) is desirable but not essential. You should be I.T literate, as you will be expected to produce progress reports including associated financial expenditure. This is a hands-on and management role which would suit an enthusiastic, capable Head Gardener with a strong and positive character.

The successful candidate will be offered a generous salary in relation to their experience, and a pension scheme as standard. This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in the operation of one of Britain’s most impressive estates.
